Endowed From on High: Temples

Blessed is the man that goes to the temple of our Lord. Psalms 65:4

Importance of Temples

[Temples are] the most holy of any place to worship on the earth. Only the home can compare with the temple in sacredness. Bible Dictionary

“Only through our ordinances can the Atonement fully be accessed.” Cleon Skousen

“The temple is a place of revelation, of inspiration, meditation, and peace—a place to restore ourselves, to clear our minds, to find answers to our prayers, and to enjoy the satisfaction of worship and service.” Elder David Sorenson, The Doctrine of Temple Work

Doctrine & Covenants 42:16; We must prepare ourselves for we are to be taught from on high and be endowed with power.

“The Latter-day Saints are a covenant people. From the days of baptism through the spiritual milestones of our lives, we make promises with God and He makes promises with us. It is the critical test of our lives to see if we will make and keep our covenants with [Him].  Elder Henry B. Eyring

Scriptural References Indicating Ancient Ordinances

Mathew 16:19; And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Doctrine & Covenants 68:12; And of as many as the Father shall bear record, to you shall be given power to seal them up unto eternal life. Amen.

1 Corinthians 15:29; Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?

Exodus 28:40-41; And for Aaron’s sons thou shalt make coats, and thou shalt make for them girdles, and bonnets shalt thou make for them, for glory and for beauty. And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.

Exodus 29:4-9; And Aaron and his sons thou shalt bring unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shalt  wash them with water. And thou shalt take the garments and put upon Aaron the coat and the robe of the ephod and the ephod, and the breastplate, and gird him with the curious girdle of the ephod… Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him. And thou shalt bring his sons, and put coats upon them. And thou shalt gird them with girdles, Aaron and his sons, and put the bonnets on them: and the priest’s office shall be theirs for a perpetual statute: and thou shalt consecrate Aaron and his sons.

Anointing (Exodus 29:7); Symbolic of Christ in Gethsemane suffering for our sickness and sorrows. Gethsemane is sometimes referred to as the “crushing place,” the actual name means “oil press.”

Moses 1-2, Genesis 1-2, Moses 6:36, Genesis 12:1-8, Abraham 2:4, 15-17; Abraham, Moses and Enoch’s eyes’ are “opened to the things of the spirit,” and they are taught the creation and purpose of life.

1) Alma 37:37; Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day.

“Every Latter-day Saint home should be a model home, where the father is the head of the household, but presiding with love, and in complete harmony with the righteous desires of the mother. Together they should be seeking the same goals for the family, and the children should feel the love and harmony that exists.” President N. Eldon Tanner, Ensign, June 1977

2) Psalms 50:5; Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.

Exodus 20:24; An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

3 Nephi 9:19-20; And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood; yea, your sacrifices and your burnt offerings shall be done away, for I will accept none of your sacrifices and your burnt offerings. And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit.

“Let us here observe, that a religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation; … it is through the medium of the sacrifice of all earthly things that men do actually know that they are doing the things that are well pleasing in the sight of God. When a man has offered in sacrifice all that he has for the truth’s sake, not even withholding his life, and believing before God that he has been called to make this sacrifice because he seeks to do his will, he does know, most assuredly, that God does and will accept his sacrifice and offering, and that he has not, nor will not seek his face in vain. Under these circumstances, then, he can obtain the faith necessary for him to lay hold on eternal life.”  President Joseph Smith, Lectures on Faith

3) Blessed is he that keepeth my commandments (D&C 58:2)

The laws of the Gospel are neither more nor less than a few of the principles of eternity revealed to the people, by which they can return to heaven from whence they came.” President Brigham Young, Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young, (1997)

4) Galatians 5:16-24; This I say then, walk in the spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh… of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God…But the fruit of the spirit is joy, love, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. The Family: A Proclamation to the World

5) Exodus 32:29; Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord

2 Nephi 32:9 But behold, I say unto you that ye must pray always, and not faint; that ye must not perform any thing unto the Lord save in the first place ye shall pray unto the Father in the name of Christ, that he will consecrate thy performance unto thee, that thy performance may be for the welfare of thy soul.

“True success in this life comes in consecrating our lives—that is, our time and choices—to God’s purposes.” Elder D. Todd Christofferson, Ensign November 2010

Doctrine & Covenants 132:19; And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife by my word, which is my law, and by the new and everlasting covenant, and it is sealed unto them by the Holy Spirit of promise, by him who is anointed, unto whom I have appointed this power and the keys of this priesthood; and it shall be said unto them—Ye shall come forth in the first resurrection; and if it be after the first resurrection, in the next resurrection; and shall inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, all heights and depths—then shall it be written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, … it shall be done unto them in all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time, and through all eternity; and shall be of full force when they are out of the world… which glory shall be a fulness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever.
