Second Coming and Millennium

“The time will come when every knee will bow, and every tongue confess to and acknowledge him, and when they who have lived upon the earth and have spurned the idea of a Supreme Being and of revelations from him, will fall with shamefacedness and humble themselves before him, exclaiming, “There is a God! O God, we once rejected thee and disbelieved thy word and set at naught thy counsels, but now we bow down in shame and we do acknowledge that there is a God, and that Jesus is the Christ.” This time will come, most assuredly. We have the faith of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus.” Brigham Young, DBY, pp. 112–13.

We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory. Articles of Faith, 1:10

The great Millennium shall come (Doctrine & Covenants 34:40)

When:
Matthew 24:36; Of that day and hour knoweth no man, but my Father only.
Doctrine & Covenants 106:4-5; We shall … do well to discern the signs of the times as we pass along, that the day of the Lord may not ‘overtake us as a thief in the night.’
“We see that everything is being fulfilled; and that the time shall soon come when the Son of Man shall descend in the clouds of heaven.” Joseph Smith, Teachings of the Prophets

Doctrine & Covenants 29:11; Will dwell in righteousness on earth a thousand years.
Doctrine & Covenants 29:22; When the thousand years are ended, I will spare the earth for a little season.

But the power and principles of evil, if they can be called principles, will never yield one particle to the righteous march of the Savior, only as they are beaten back inch by inch, and we have got to take the ground by force. Yes, by the mental force of faith, and by good works, the march forth of the Gospel will increase, spread, grow and prosper, until the nations of the earth will feel that Jesus has the right to rule King of nations as he does King of Saints.” Brigham Young, DBY pp.113

The state of the world in which we now live in his comparable to the Telestial World. The state in which we will live in during the millennium will comparable to the Terrestrial World. Thus again we see the symbolic progression which prepares us, if we are righteous, to live in a Celestial state and world (See Three Degrees of Gory Note for more information on these Heavens). Just has we can live with Christ as our ruler and our judge during the Millennium, those who make it to the Terrestrial Kingdom after this life will still live in the presence of Christ. Yet, how much glorious it will be if we make it to the Celestial world so that we might live in the presence of not only our Savior Jesus Christ, but our Father in Heaven also, the literal Father of Jesus Christ and the Father of our Spirits of whom created this great plan so we might have His happiness also. (Referenced from Gospel Principles Manual, Millennium pp. 263-267)

Purpose:
Doctrine & Covenants 101:23-28; The veil of the covering of my temple, in my tabernacle, which hideth the earth, shall be taken off, and all flesh shall see me together. And every corruptible thing, [all] that dwells upon all the face of the earth, shall be consumed; All things shall become new, that my knowledge and glory may dwell upon all the earth. And in that day the enmity of all flesh, shall cease from before my face. And in that day Satan shall not have power to tempt any man.

Heaven will visit the earth often during the Millennium. They will help with the work done in the temples and with missionary work. President Joseph Smith

The first great work to be done is to perform ordinances in the temple for both the living people and the dead people. People who have been resurrected will help the people living on earth to find the names of their dead relatives and correct any mistakes in the records. All of the ordinances necessary to seal families together will be done in the temples. Families will be linked from one generation to another all the way back to Adam. The other great work is the preaching of the gospel. Everyone will be able to hear the gospel and accept it. Some good people who are not members of Jesus’ Church will still live on the earth when the Millennium begins. Eventually, however, all people will know and say that Jesus is the Savior of the world. Brigham Young, DBY pp.113

Living:
Doctrine & Covenants 101:29-34; And there shall be no sorrow because there is no death. In that day an infant shall not die until he is old; and his life shall be as the age of a tree; And when he dies he shall not sleep, that is to say in the earth, but shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye, and shall be caught up, and his rest shall be glorious. Yea, verily I say unto you, in that day when the Lord shall come, he shall reveal all things—Things which have passed, and hidden things which no man knew, things of the earth, by which it was made, and the purpose and the end thereof—Things most precious, things that are above, and things that are beneath, things that are in the earth, and upon the earth, and in heaven.

Doctrine & Covenants 63:51; Children shall grow up until they become old; men shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye.

“Will Mother’s have their children in the eternity-Yes! Yes! Mothers, you shall have your children, for their debt is paid…It will never grow [in the grave]; it will still be a child, in the same precise form [when it rises] as it appeared before it died out of it’s mother’s arms, but possessing all the intelligence of a God.” Joseph Smith, KFD

End of the Millennium:
Revelation 20:7-10; One Final Struggle Will Occur Near the End of the Millennium. Satan and his followers will be defeated in the final war.

Complete righteousness and peace will continue until the end of the 1,000 years, when Satan “shall be loosed for a little season, that he may gather together his armies.” The armies of Satan will fight against the hosts of heaven, who will be led by Michael, or Adam. Satan and his followers will be defeated and cast out forever.  Gospel Fundamentals, Chapter 34

After the little season [of Satan’s last rebellion] is expired and the earth undergoes its last change and is glorified, then will all the meek inherit the earth, wherein dwelleth the righteous. Joseph Smith, Teachings of Presidents of the Church, Chapter 21

The Earth will be changed to a sanctified, celestial state:

Doctrine and Covenants 130:9; “This earth, in its sanctified and immortal state, will be made like unto crystal and will be a Urim and Thummim to the inhabitants who dwell thereon, whereby all things pertaining to an inferior kingdom, or all kingdoms of a lower order, will be manifest to those who dwell on it; and this earth will be Christ’s.

“This earth will be rolled back into the presence of God and crowned with celestial glory…when the earth was sanctified and became like a sea of glass, it would be one great urim and thummim, and the Saints could look in it and see as they are seen.”
Joseph Smith, Teachings of Presidents of the Church, Chapter 21

If we want to behold Jerusalem as it was in the days of the Savior; or if we want to see the Garden of Eden as it was when created, there we are, and we see it as it existed spiritually, for it was created first spiritually and then temporally, and spiritually it still remains. And when there we may behold the earth as at the dawn of creation, … we are there; in fact, we are like the light of the morning.  Brigham Young, DBY, 380

“When I contemplate the rapidity with which the great and glorious day of the coming of the Son of Man advances, when He shall come to receive His Saints unto Himself, where they shall dwell in His presence, and be crowned with glory and immortality; when I consider that soon the heavens are to be shaken, and the earth tremble and reel to and fro; and that the heavens are to be unfolded as a scroll when it is rolled up; and that every mountain and island are to flee away, I cry out in my heart, What manner of persons ought we to be in all holy conversation and godliness! [See 2 Peter 3:11.]” Joseph Smith, Teachings of Presidents of the Church, Chapter 21
